A new video by DesignLAB architects features their work on the addition to the Paul Rudolph-designed Claire T. Carney Library at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
A few months ago, the firm shared a video exploring their philosophy of Critical Stewardship, which is rooted in a universal responsibility to history and the environment and ascribes value through the lens of community.
Today they released a series of spotlight videos that show Critical Stewardship in action: the Worcester Blackstone Visitor Center, the Hitchcock Center for the Environment, and the renovation of Claire T. Carney Library at UMass Dartmouth.
Each brief video follows the project from conception to construction, showcasing how context and historic legacy are leveraged for the future.
The University's goal for the library project was to "transform the 1972 library into a modern hub of knowledge creation, dissemination, and interaction," envisioning the library "as the intellectual and scholarly hub of the campus."
DesignLAB architects was responsible for the 160,000 SF renovation and designing the 27,000 SF, two-story addition. The expansion is located directly beneath the Science & Engineering Lecture Halls (also by Rudolph) and serves as a center for social interaction and intellectual discourse.
The addition provides the library with a new multi-purpose entry to the building, complete with a gallery, a new main circulation desk, an adaptable lecture hall, a cafe and gathering area, as well as group study spaces. The library expansion accommodates 212,500 volumes to suit the growth of the library collection over the next 20 years.
