The video is drone footage of the demolition of Paul Rudolph’s Burroughs Wellcome Headquarters in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

Project Spotlight: Claire T. Carney Library, UMass Dartmouth - August 28, 2020

DesignLAB completed construction on the addition to the Paul Rudolph-designed Claire T. Carney Library at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The University's goal for the project was to "transform the 1972 library into a modern hub of knowledge creation, dissemination, and interaction," envisioning the library "as the intellectual and scholarly hub of the campus."

DesignLAB architects was responsible for the 160,000 SF renovation and designing the 27,000 SF, two-story addition. The expansion is located directly beneath the Science & Engineering Lecture Halls (also by Rudolph) and serves as a center for social interaction and intellectual discourse. The addition provides the library with a new multi-purpose entry to the building, complete with a gallery, a new main circulation desk, an adaptable lecture hall, a cafe and gathering area, as well as group study spaces. The library expansion accommodates 212,500 volumes to suit the growth of the library collection over the next 20 years.

Paul Rudolph and the Dynamic Genius of the Walker Guest House - December 2, 2019

The Walker Guest House, designed by the preeminent architect Paul Rudolph for Dr. Walter Willard Walker, has stood the test of time as a perfect union of function and form. In this episode of Expert Voices, Walker family member Tian Dayton and architectural critic Paul Goldberger discuss the genius of the house’s dynamic design and the enduring legacy of both its creator and patron. Famous soon after it was built, the Walker Guest House was voted one of the most important houses of the century by the readers of Architecture Record in 1957 and offered for sale as a highlight of Sotheby’s Important Design Sale on December 12, 2019 in New York City.

New Practices in Hong Kong Architecture: A Symposium - March 01, 2019

Please join us for a symposium presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Paul Rudolph: The Hong Kong Journey, and convened by Barry Bergdoll and Seng Kuan. Taking Rudolph’s work as a jumping off point, “New Practices in Hong Kong Architecture: A Symposium” will focus on the innovative design and architectural solutions implemented in present-day Hong Kong.

The reordering of the globalized world and the emergence of a new generation of young talent in Hong Kong have contributed to a surge of creative energy in the region. On a local level, Hong Kong has seen a rise in public interest in architecture, land use, urban development, preservation, and ecology. Designers, architects, and planners are responding to Hong Kong’s new social and cultural contexts, which are vastly different from the conditions Rudolph faced over 30 years ago. The program will facilitate international dialogue between architects in Hong Kong and New York City, allowing both sides to be exposed to ideas and issues that may influence the way they design cities in the future.

Each panel will build off a key motif extrapolated from Rudolph’s design methodology and will focus on an aspect of Hong Kong’s current design culture, exploring perspectives on the evolution of design thinking and practice in the city and the region.

The exhibition Paul Rudolph: The Hong Kong Journey was organized by The Paul Rudolph Institute for Modern Architecture.

A short documentary exploring the modernist architectural movement of Brutalism. Shot on location at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Concretopia showcases the visionary beauty of Paul Rudolph’s 1963 design for the SMTI (now UMass) campus.

A meditation on the significance, influence, and progressive ideals behind Brutalism, the film takes viewers on a hypnotizing journey through abstract concrete environments, while celebrating this uncompromising architectural style. The soundtrack, produced by RabbitSquirrel, is a haunting industrial soundscape composed using field recordings of the film’s environments.

Diagonal Movement - September 12, 2016

By Griffin Lee Kaiser, this video was filmed with permission at the Elion-Hitchings building formerly know as the Burroughs-Wellcome headquarters.

Built in 1972, this structure was designed by famed architect, Paul Rudolph. It was later renamed the Elion-Hitchings building in honor of the Nobel prize-winning chemists. The facility is one of the most recognizable landmarks in pharmaceutical history.

You may also recognize the building from the movie, Brainstorm, with Christopher Walken and the late Natalie Wood. (Her final film, the movie was released almost two years after her Wood’s death.)

The Sarasota Architectural Foundation organized a symposium on architect Paul Rudolph's Sarasota, Florida legacy in 2012 at the Ringling College of Art + Design. Architect Carl Abbott, FAIA, spoke about the importance of Rudolph's Sarasota High School buildings and why they need to be preserved.

Paul Rudolph's Boston Government Service Center featured in Verizon Droid X Hotspot Commercial - 2010

Paul Rudolph's 1962 Boston Government Service Center is used as the setting for the 2010 commercial for Verizon Droid X Hotspot.

The building was also the setting for much of Martin Scorsese’s 2006 film The Departed. The Department of Employment Services Building is the police headquarters in the movie, and there are shots of the exterior and interior.

Site Specific: The Legacy of Regional Modernism - June 24, 2008

At a time when designers and architects are thinking more and more about sustainability issues in their practices, they often ignore or are ignorant of past examples, such as the important work done by the Sarasota School in the days when architects naturally built to climate.

Paul Rudolph's Riverview High School is a case study, a beautiful expression of climate sensitive architecture. This film advocates a thoughtful evaluation of the building and the ideas designed into the school such as day-lighting, natural ventilation, sun-screens, and shade-giving plantings.

RUDOLPH AND RENEWAL: Paul Rudolph and the Architecture of the Model City - 2008

This short documentary was produced by American Beat in 2008 for the Yale School of Architecture, as part of their exhibit, "Model City: Buildings and Projects by Paul Rudolph for Yale and New Haven", to celebrate the renovation and expansion of Rudolph's Art + Architecture Building at Yale.

The film features interviews with a number of Paul Rudolph's former students, colleagues, and co-workers; archival images of Rudolph and his work in New Haven; and archival films of the city of New Haven as well as former mayor, Richard Lee, from the earliest period of urban renewal in New Haven. The film also features commentary by Doug Rae, a New Haven historian, placing Rudolph's work into the larger context of the city's renewal period during the late 1950s through the 1970s.

Paul Rudolph: The DNA Of Architecture - September 2, 1995

Founded in 1972, the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) is an independent school offering graduate and undergraduate degree programs in architecture. It is recognized internationally not only as a center for design innovation, but as a forum for debating new ideas in architecture. From the beginning, SCI-Arc actively engaged the community with public programs, including a lecture series, which started in 1974 and still happens Wednesday nights.
