Paul Rudolph’s Atkinson Residence at 628 East Stamford Avenue in Auburn, Alabama is for sale.
The home was designed in 1940 for Thomas Prater Atkinson (1884-1970) a professor in the Foreign Languages Department at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) Rudolph was only 22 years old when he designed the residence and oversaw its construction. The design Incorporated technical innovations such as central heating, corner windows and a copper standing seam roof, and was labelled as a 'builder's house' by several local residents due to its similarity to local builder's advertisements in the 1950's.
The living room features a 6'-0" high x 10'-0" wide ornamental mural which was most likely a result from Rudolph attending a required class #447 on 'Mural Design' while in school. The mural is inscribed with a 'v'-shaped groove on plaster above the fireplace. The fireplace mural is currently covered for protection but is intact.
The single level home sits on a large corner lot and has been used as a rental investment property before being listed for sale. All appliances remain and the second bath features an updated shower. Ceilings throughout the living area are tongue and groove pine, and floors are hardwood throughout.
This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of architectural history and especially one that features one of the few surviving murals created by Rudolph.
